What is Slope?
In mathematics, the slope (often denoted by the letter m) describes both the direction and the steepness of a line. It tells us how much 'up' or 'down' we go for every step we move to the right.
Positive SlopeLines go up from left to right
Negative SlopeLines go down from left to right
📚 Key Terms
- Rise (Δy)
- The vertical distance between two points. It's how much the line goes up or down.
- Run (Δx)
- The horizontal distance between two points. It's how far left or right the line goes.
- Y-Intercept
- The point where the line crosses the vertical Y-axis (where x = 0).
📐 Geometric Concepts
- Angle of Inclination
- The angle (in degrees) formed between the line and the positive x-axis. A 45° angle means slope = 1.
- Midpoint
- The exact center point halfway between your two selected points.
- Perpendicular Bisector
- A line that intersects the segment at its midpoint at exactly 90 degrees.
Slope Calculator
Calculate the slope (gradient) of a line passing through two points using the formula m = (y₂-y₁)/(x₂-x₁). Our calculator also provides the angle of inclination and the equation of the line.
